Preview links to uploaded Asset return 404 error

This was reported as a bug, but after that we decided to not fix it. From Commerce 7.5, we highly recommend to use new asset system. Then unfortunately there will be no (official) fix for it.
Please note that beside this problem, the legacy asset is still functioning.

In our Commerce Manager, when we add new Assets using the file uploader (i.e. PDFs, images, etc.), the preview by clicking the asset's Icon is not working. The icon-link redirect to the asset using the following URL scheme, but returns a 404-error rather than showing the file:
http://commerce.manager.domain/Root/[Asset-ID]/[Asset-Name]
Does anybody have a hint, how we can get this URL to work the proper way? Should this be done in IIS?
