Importing page types to a busy site

Vote:

We have experienced problems when doing a release to production where we need to import page types to a public site that is very busy. Even if we recycle the web, it almost instantly gets new requests, which will make it nearly impossible to import page types, or updates to existing ones. This is especially true for front page and dynamic properties.

I've done my google but cannot seem to find any article that discusses best practice for this kind of situation. We need to have Epi running in order to perform the import, but we don't want to serve any pages during the update. Is there a way to do this?

What about setting a new host in the IIS settings, so your site aint hit by other requests....

Hmmm... That would efficiently cut of all requests, but it would cause lots of unneccessary 404:s. Wouldn't it be possible to put up a static HTML page or something to inform the users that "This site is currently being updated. Please check back again in 1 minute" or something.
