Could be almost anything. If you click on details do you get anymore error messages? Try to first install a sample website with deployment center. That is were I start when installing a new machine. If that is working most of your stuff is in place like sql server and IIS.
When installing via VS you need to have an instance of SQL server if you are using CMS 7.
Try to run VS in adminsitrator mode could help as well.

Hello everybody and thanks for reading this.
I've been trying to create an EPiServer website using Visual studio.
When it's about to "get done" I get this object reference not set to an instance of an object...
Any ideas on why?
