Must the name of product be unique?

I was wondering whether the name of a product and SKU must be unique?
It could be that uniqueness is in the different property values of different SKUs that all share the same name.
But wouldt the productlisting than still work? Because it looks like, when clicking a product in the listing, the productname in the url is used to find the corresponding product/SKU, am I right?
