What is the "Information Channel" on the "Advanced Informatio" tab in edit mode used for.

I know this is not exactly a development issue, but I have had a few queries regards this, both internally here and from prospective clients. Embarrassing when I tell them "I don't know, but it will be in the extensive editor's manual" when it is NOT mentioned at all in the editors manual.
Any help, explanations or suggestions on its use would be appreciated.

The information channel checkbox flags that the page will be available from the information viewer portlet and does only affect portal appearance.
Unfortunately this is not documented in the current version of our manuals. We are working on the portal documentation where information regarding this feature will be covered.
