How to get Optimizely Graph developer instances (90-day) for learning CMS 13

We are trying to get the 90-day Graph instance(s) for development purposes, to learn CMS 13. Optimizely support says we can add it ourselves via Admin Center for our organization, then add the Graph product and invite the users who should have access. However, there is no option in Admin Center to add products or users, even though support says there should be. We keep getting seemingly automated replies from support.

How have you managed to get dev instances?

Answer the automated replies in the support portal (support.optimizely.com) and eventually a human will get back to you. I got a response last week this way.

I got mine the same day I made the request, but did not receive an email notification when the index was ready. Keep an eye on the state of the support ticket on the support website.

Support say in the ticket that we can create the index ourselves, but the options they refer to are not available in Admin Center. Did they create the index for you, in your case?

This is relatively new, but you can now do this yourself using home.optimizely.com together with Admin Center.

Graph does not show up automatically; first you need to do a few things:

  1. Go to admincenter.optimizely.com/access/products. You should see Graph listed here. Click on it to see any instances available for your organization.
  2. Go to admincenter.optimizely.com/user-management/users, find yourself in the list and view/edit your details. Choose "Add Product Access" and select Graph from the dropdown, including the instance and the role (Administrator).
  3. Go back to the Home dashboard at home.optimizely.com. A block for "Graph" should now appear that you can click on.
  4. You are now in the BETA environment of Graph. On the left-hand side you will see "Developer > Development Accounts", where you manage developer indices.

a. This environment is also where you can view UI that was previously part of Search & Navigation, such as tracking/statistics and managing Synonyms and Pinned Results (formerly Best Bets) for search results via Graph.

This is the same process I use for my clients. What probably throws people off is that access to Graph is granted through the user management screen in the admin area. There is also some terminology confusion: Admin Center is just the area for managing users, products, permissions and settings for the organisation, and it is not in beta. What is in beta is the Graph management system.

This is just the admin area of the organisation on Optimizely home

This is the graph management area that you'll get access to when you set the permissions as William outlined

I do not have access to Graph in Admin Center (only Opal). I imagine this might be related to organization-level permission settings.

You will not see Graph in the dropdown until you are actually added as a user on the Graph product. In Admin Center, go to the products list and add people there, or open your specific user and try to add the Graph product to it. Then you should see it. Everyone, at least on CMS 13, should have it.

I am still not seeing Graph. I think I need to be invited to my work organization in Admin Center. When I log in I currently only see "Optimizely CMS SaaS Trial".

Update: I just received the organization invite from my colleague, and now I can see my organization in the same dropdown as Optimizely CMS SaaS Trial, and Graph is there.

@Scott Reed (Optimizely MVP) Great post!
It would be useful to include information about where the developer will find the function to generate their index. And perhaps it should say that one needs to be an administrator in Admin Center to do this.

I.e in section Provisioning User Access via Opti ID, in the end where you have
"Users who are given access should get an email invite, and then they will see Graph inside their dropdown of products." does not explain where they can see it. You say 'In the Optimizely Home' in the beginning of the section, but including the url too would be good.

If a developer does not have an OptiID beforehand, will it be created for them as part of the invite process or do they need to create that first before they can be invited? I already had one so I don't know what would have happened in that case.

Most of that is in the article, there's a whole section on where the user does to generate the dev index in the post (at the bottom). I call out you need to be an admin in the admin center explicitly. There's a screenshot showing where the dropdown is, it's just the standard product area. I'm not going to add the URL of Optimizely home because every person who's using Optimizely should know that, and the email you get has a link to it anyway. As far as Opti ID goes, that's a completely different conversation and it's quite complex because it depends completely on how you've configured Opti ID to be set up with your organisation. But I'm not going to cover that in this blog post. There are plenty of other blog posts on Opti ID configuration, but that's not related to Graph. Appreciate the feedback, but I'm going to leave it as it is.

Okidoki.
I'm just flagging that things like "the standard product area" is not that obvious to all of us using Optimizely - yet . But I also agree that it's good to limit scope.

Great article anyhow!

Okay, I've put a couple of references to home.optimizely.com just so it's very clear.

Regarding Opti ID: it is usually set up via SSO, connected to your Entra instance. This requires collaboration between the developers who manage the organisation in Optimizely Home and your organisation's IT. When set up correctly it works in one of two ways. With SCIM, all users are automatically pushed into Opti ID based on your organisation's groups and settings. Without SCIM, if you log in with the right email domain, an account is provisioned automatically. If no connection has been set up via Entra, you need to be manually invited via the admin portal's user management area.
