Keeping of version numbers

When publishing a new version of a page, it is given the next free version number, which is OK. But if a previous version is deleted, all version numbers are changed which is very confusing. I would like the version number for a page to be a real version number which does not change even if previous versions are deleted.

Addendum: Possibility to sort the version list ASC/DESC on, at least, the version number would be nice.
