Handle packages as variants in catalog

We have a customer that is requesting the possibility to have a product with packages.
They have created them as packages since they have seperate stock of the components, but on the site they are selling them as a variant and would like the product page to show the different variants.
Today the Commerce Catalog UI doesn't support you to add packages to a product's variants.
