Hi Magnus,
You are right, there's no way to change user's approval status in community administration GUI, currently it seems that only custom plugin can achieve this.
This should be a feature request for upcoming version.

Is there any GUI support for chaning a user's approval status? I find where it's possible to search for pending users for example, but no place where I can change the status. I want to change the status from approved to pending for testing purposes.
