We have more around 3000 files stored in the VPP folders and I am using UnifiedDirectory Search method to search for the files. But the performance is very bad, it takes around 8 seconds to return the results.

We are using Episerver 6 and  actually want to develop a document search which could do a free text search on documents as well as can fileter the documents based on the properties selected.(Documents along with thier properties come from Sharepoint).
