Can updating the DB with updateDatabaseSchema="true" on a farmed environment break the DB?

Are there issues when updating a database schema with the updateDatabaseSchema="true" attribute on a farmed web environment?

We are upgrading an EPiServer CMS version 8.0.0 site to 8.11.0.  We want to avoid issues using this option.  Also, is there further documentation regarding this matter that I can review on episerver.com?  Thanks.
