HTML 4.01 strict compatiblity

Does anyone know whether it is possible to make the HTML Editor in EPiServer use instead of , and instead of , as the and tags break the strict validation for HTML 4.01? (This is the mark-up you get when you choose the 'B' and 'I' buttons when editing properties of type 'XHTML string'. We're looking at using the validation hook-in described in http://www.episerver.com/templates/CommunitySample____2630.aspx but wondered if there is a better / easier way of doing this.
