Caching for browsers with httpCacheVaryByCustom

Does anyone know if httpCacheVaryByCustom="browser" (EPsCacheVaryByCustom="browser" in 4.x) works exactly like the .NET VaryByCustom="browser"?

Or has EpiServer overridden and simplified the detection of browsers? So that it only recognizes IE vs Firefox?
I want to make sure the output cache works for as many browsers as possible, especially for mobile devices vs regular browsers.

The browser thing is handled by the .NET, using EPIServer we can handle different things.
