SearchDataSource Total Count and exlcude words

I am using SearchDataSource for search purpose and generating cusom xml.

How do  I get the total number of records that match the search word from SearchDataSource? Is there a way to set the  ExcludeWords, pagepublished in the search criteria using SearchDataSource?

Is there another approach for doing all the above?
