Granularising subscriptions

We use subscriptions extensively. But there's been a request to be notified (a la subscription) when new content is added to a page - by receiving a link directly to the added PDF or Word document - rather than just to the page that has had the content added to it. I haven't seen anything like this. Does anyone know of something or how to attach an EPsubscribe type effect to items that make up the content of a page?
