SearchDataSource Very Slow When Searching Files

Hi,
I'm using a SearchDataSource control to do a simple keyword search across pages and files.
A search for pages alone is relatively fast, but as soon as I try to search files as well, the response time for the SearchDataSource increases considerably.
I do have quite a large number of files to search through, so I was wondering if anyone has any tips for increasing performance?
