How to amend sequential workflow 'Not approved' email template

Hi,
We have configured the sequential workflow and it is working fine. We have managed to change the text for 'approved page' template as it is given in lang/workflowfoundation_en.xml , however we cannot see any pre-default text for 'not approved' section.
Secondly, it looks like 'Not approved' emails are using HTML body with light grey background, can anyone tell if we can change template text/body background (or we have to re-do the basic workflow if the email template is hard-coded)
