I have been assigned the task to implement an avatar for the community user.

Does community framework offers the functionality out of teh box? If so has anyone done yet?

I think what you're looking for is the Mypage Portrait. You could take inspiration from page 94 of http://world.episerver.com/PageFiles/22546/A%20Programmers%20Guide%203_1_REVB.pdf , even though it's from a previous community release where the namespace was still 'StarCommunity'.
