Pointing Authoring Database and Search at Production Servers

Hi,
I have contacted Ektron Support about this request, but thought I'd also post it here too - not that it will do any good as no one seems to reply.
Has anyone managed to point their authoring database and search at the production servers? We will be carrying out server upgrades on the authoring search and database servers and want to restore the authoring databases on the production SQL Server node, which would be straight forward, but we are unsure of how to configure the search.
