Extending the existing Versions gadget?

I would like to let (or possibly, force) the editors to add a comment whenever he/she publishes a page change. That is, a comment that will be associated with the version user is currently publishing. Is this possible? 

It would be cool to show the comment in the "versions" gadget already existing in the admin interface. Just a new column in there. Is the "versions" gadget extendable? Or should I write a new one?

Although I don't think you could force them to use it (out of the box, at least), but I haven't tested this a lot.
