SmushIt and PunyPNG on file upload

We are looking into creating a plugin that does lossless minifying of File manager images on upload and/or on the Editor's request.

The great Visual Studio extension Image Optimizer uses SmushIt and PunyPNG. I've also seen that SmushIt exists as a Wordpress plugin. So those two seem like good choices.

Has anyone done something similiar?
