Truncate the version list?

Is there any way to truncate (empty) the version list fr pages in EPiServer?
I've tried the settings for maximum versions in admin config but it doesn't really removes the old versions from the pages.

If I remember correctly, the old versions will be removed (as defined by config) the next time a new version is created.
