Which EPiServer version? What OS are you running?

Check the system requirements for your environment.

You'll find installation guides for all versions in the Documentation section.

I am having the same issue using Windows 7, Visual Studo Express 2012 for Web, EPiServer Extension for VS Express downloaded from http://world.episerver.com/PageFiles/118012/EPiServerVsExtensionForExpressSKU.vsix, and EPiServer 7.5.

My environment is correct as far as I can tell (following http://world.episerver.com/Documentation/CMS/Get-started-with-CMS/1-Setting-up-your-development-environment/). VS Express is run as administrator, and I get the error no matter what type of EPiServer project I try to create (Web Forms or MVC), and no matter which .NET Framework version I select (4, 4.5, or 4.5.1).

Any suggestions?

I've also seen this. The solution was to install a site from deployment center, create a empty standard asp.net mvc site and copy the files from that to the site folder. So I didn't use the project templates at all.
